This past weekend we set up a booth at the Charleston Kennel Club's dog show and we had a great time talking with dog owners from all around our region. I am writing this blog because of a conversation I had with a lady about purchasing pet food through Amazon. In that conversation I realized we had never discussed with our clients or potential clients the importance of purchasing your pet foods from an authorized retailer.
I think most people assume that when buying online, regardless of from whom, that your pet food comes from an authorized retailer. Unfortunately that is not the case in the pet food industry.
I'm positive that your vet has told you to be careful where you buy your flea/heartworm meds and to be careful with online pharmacies. How do I know this? As a vet tech for many years I told clients this on a daily basis however we did not discuss buying your pet food online. This was a few years back and buying your pet food online just was not a big thing yet.
We buy our product from an authorized distributor. In order to become an authorized retailer we had some hoops to jump through especially since we were going to be a home delivery store and not a brick and mortar store. We had to prove that we had a heated & cooled secure storage facility that is able to accept deliveries from a semi-truck. We had to explain several times that our plan was to be a local business providing local home delivery and that we did not plan on becoming a national company and shipping product all across the country. We have strict guidelines and minimum advertised pricing we have to follow on our website to ensure their product is represented properly and in a manner that the consumer is able to obtain the knowledge needed to choose a food.
As we've discussed before we only sell products that we would give to our own pets and because of this our product line is fairly small. It is expanding but in order for us to maintain selling only high quality foods it takes some time to do our research and make sure that we are choosing only the best product lines for our pets and our clients pets.
I hope the take away from this is that buying online for many things is great however when it comes to pet food you need to be careful. You need to know where your product is coming from and who is handling it and how it is being handled.
As always we are here to help and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
